Education
Mr. Shigekane graduated from the University of Hawaii in 1974, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in both Philosophy
and Psychology. He received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Santa Clara, School of Law in December, 1976 and was admitted to
the Hawaii Bar in May, 1977.
Experience
Upon admission to the Hawaii Bar, Mr. Shigekane worked briefly at the Kauai County Attorney’s Office, where he was responsible
for its independent Family Support Division. In 1978, he joined the State Office of Consumer Protection.
In 1980, Mr. Shigekane was appointed Deputy Attorney General for the State of Hawaii, assigned to its Public Utilities
Division. During his tenure with the division, he represented the State Consumer Advocate in proceeding before the Public Utilities Commission,
including all rate-increase requests filed by water, gas, sewer, telephone and electric utilities and intra-state shipping and motor carriers.
In 1985, Mr. Shigekane joined the Litigation Division of the Department of the Attorney General, defending personal injury
lawsuits filed against the State of Hawaii.
Mr. Shigekane has served as lead counsel in jury trials which included catastrophic injuries such as brain damage and
quadriplegia. He has tried cases in all four Judicial Circuits in the State of Hawaii and in the Federal Court for the District of
Hawaii. He has also argued cases before the Hawaii Intermediate Court of Appeal, the Hawaii Supreme Court and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Affiliations
Mr. Shigekane is a member of the Hawaii State Bar Association, is licensed to appear before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals
and is an arbitrator with the Court Annexed Arbitration Program, First Judicial Circuit, State of Hawaii.
